Love Pugs Day 2012 (Gallery)

On Sunday 12th of February 2012, the 3rd Annual ‘Love Pugs Day’ was held at Walkhaven Dog Park in Johannesburg. The event, which is organised by Johannesburg based NPO Judd and Clawds’ Helping Hands, was a resounding success and a fun day in the sun for humans and dogs alike. Most importantly, it attracted over 700 dog lovers to the park and raised a record amount of funds (compared to the previous 2 years) for this years chosen beneficiary - Wetnose Animal Shelter.

The day was choc a block with things to do and see - we had a jumping castle and face painting to keep the children busy as well as many stands selling doggy as well as human goodies for those who like to shop. Wagtail set up a gazebo and gave demonstrations in their speciality ‘K9 Yoga’ and doggy massages - this was something which captured the interest of guests as almost no one has ever seen or heard of such a thing! With your doggy doing yoga with you, there are no more excuses for skipping your workouts!

The highlight of the day was the ‘doggy wedding ceremonies’ competition. We set a romantic scene with hearts and flowers and our doggy grooms looked the part in their bow ties next to the lovely doggy brides with their flowing white veils. People crowded around the wedding scenes, oohing and aahing over the blushing couples as proud ‘parents’ looked on. Of course not all of them had a choice and our little pug-Chihuahua cross didn’t look too enamoured about her new husband Gizmo (Sorry Lola!). If it weren't for someone doing their business on the pug-podium, the weddings would have gone off perfectly but alas, dogs will be dogs and that's why we love them. Professional photos were taken of all the contestants and the winner of ‘best couple’ will be judged on the Helping Hands facebook group.

Raffles played a bit part in the day and since we had so many amazing prizes - it ended up being quite the competitive event with happy and disappointed faces alike as we called out the winning numbers at the end of the day. The prizes were generously sponsored by Rogz, Petsure, Complete Pet, Montego, Alicatbodyfun and Cresta Hotels (who sponsored the ultimate prize that everyone was vying for - a weekend getaway to one of their luxury hotels in Bostwana!). Snack baskets were provided by Walkhaven and those who were not running after their excitable hounds could be seen languidly enjoying a picnic on the grass over a civilised glass of wine or two.

Love Pugs Day 2012 was the third of its kind and one of many events in which we enjoyed the support of over a hundred people. This year our beneficiary was Wet Nose Animal Rescue Centre, a registered ‘right to life’ animal rescue organisation located just outside Rayton, east of Pretoria. Wetnose is currently home to over two hundred rescued animals and our hope for the event was not just to raise funds, but to generate awareness for this unbelievable organisation that gives all these abandoned and lost animals a second chance at life.

Without the combined efforts of Jade Ollis, Stephen Leinberger, Claudia and Judd Sherrin, Melinda Van Blerk and Kevin Roberts this event would not have been the success that it was, and we felt so privileged to have been able to provide for Wetnose the support that we have. We hope to achieve the same if not better successes in future and hope to see you all there, please support us: for Pugs’ sake!

Love Pugs Day 2011 at Walkhaven Dog Park (Gallery)

This year was the marking of our second Love Pugs day for Valentines day in aid of HAWS - Hartebeespoort Animal Society. What a better way to spend a day of love, than with your best friends!!! Along with the day we had a few stalls selling a variety of products such as Recipe Jars. We had a VERY friendly kissing booth where guests were able to give rescues from the shelters lots of love and kisses. A successful adoption was made on the day and Helping Hands was able to raise R2,389.00 for the shelter.

Christmas Cheese & Wine Tasting at Walkhaven Dog Park (Gallery)

We would just like to start off by thanking everyone who attended and helped us in making this event possible. Without your support none of it would have been possible.

WOW where does one begin to start writing about such an amazing evening. For those who were not able to make it to the event let us try paint a picture for you of the evening and atmosphere at Walkhaven Dog Park.

Guests arrived to a warm welcome by the Helping Hands team at the front desk where they were informed about raffles, competitions and shown to their seats. The venue was set up in a warm and welcoming Christmas theme. Each guest received their own gift bag waiting for them at their seats which included various reading materials, magazines, brochures, vouchers, doggee & kittee snax and even human snacks! Thank you to all of our sponsors for all of your donations!

The evening was kicked off by our very own MC, Judd, who wasted no time in welcoming every one and thanking every one for their support as well as informing everyone why this event was put together and who it was in aid of and the importance of raising as much funds as possible. A delicious Walkhaven specialty buffet meal was then served, tasty dessert included!

A few raffles where drawn and prizes handed out, the atmosphere was electric, what a lovely bunch of people, and the venue was fully book. No matter where you looked you would see tables full of old friends and new ones sharing in conversation and laughter.

Guests where then treated to the opportunity to have their pictures taken in the Christmas room with Mr and Mrs. Santa Claws AKA Paws, Sox & Cleo - who were our Christmas mascots for 2010, which was a great success and tons of fun had, as you can see in the pictures.

Then came the moment so many people had been looking forward to, the wine and cheese tasting which lived up to even the finest wine connoisseur’s tastes. Wines such as Nederburg (fifa collection wines), Calais and KWV all tantalised our tastebuds.

In between all that was going on there where spot prizes of wines, stay aways at pet friendly accommodations all over SA, and more raffles. Not to mention the incredible auctions of fantastic prizes such as Plume duvets & Sabastabean designer Babywear.

And to end the night off or should I say start it up, there was a BRILLIANT live band performance by 7 Car Pileup who played to the crowds enjoyment late into the evening. There was plenty of dancing and sing-along’s.

We would have to conclude that the event was a great success and complete enjoyment for all that attended.

And much of the needed funds for 4 paws was raised!

Pug Rescue arrived with all of their merchandise and HILLS sponsorships in full force. Hills sponsored stunning Valentine's gifts for all guest as well as treats bags!

The day started out with a bit of scare as it was raining, but by 11am the rain had blown over allowing us to start with our Fancy Dress competition, which was judged by Sharne, who also sponsored the prizes by DOGGEE SNAX for our different categories as well as lots of sample bags which was also donated to Pug Rescue.

A stunning buffet with roasted meats and vegetables was supplied by Walkhaven with a delicious dessert.
